Description

On his first combat assignment, Cornett accompanied the Vietnamese Rangers on a search-and-destroy mission near Khe Sang. There he gained entree into a culture that he would ultimately respect greatly and admire deeply. Cornett's most challenging military duty began when he joined the Phoenix Program. As part of AK squad, he dressed in enemy uniform and roamed the deadly Central Highlands, capturing high-ranking VC officers in hot firefights and ambushes. It was there, deep in enemy territory, where the smallest mistake meant sudden death, that the Vietnamese fighting men earned his utmost respect.

Summary: "Buy this Book!"

This Author tells it how it is from an NCO's viewpoint while conducting Counter Insurgency Operations- unconventional warfare during his Combat in Vietnam.

The Author has a very interesting career path in which you would think for some actions, he would be finished and written off. He in fact survives to beat the odds and comes out on top. I won't spoil the book, but I was impressed at the outcome and his journey from beginning to transition. It shows that structure and rules are not always needed to accomplish results.

An Unconventional Book by a Veteran that works completely outside of the box and triumphs because of it.

A refreshing read that does not follow regular format structure.

Summary: "Another memoir."

Meh.

It's a quick read and interesting, but not particularly well written. It's certainly a good story, but not peculiar among Vietnam memoirs. The book seemed written for a target audience that views "Rambo: First Blood, Part II" as the apex of filmmaking (don't get me wrong, it's not the worst either).

I think that writing this book did less for expanding the minds of readers as healing the wounds of the author.

That said, I have a great deal of respect for the author as a man and as a soldier, just not so much as a writer.

Summary: "GIVE US "THE GRAY TIGER!""

This book is one of the most under-rated works about Vietnam that I've read. It is an amazing read. Cornett and his Father are a part of that dying breed of Tough "Golden Age" Americans who accomplished the impossible. This book will always have an honored place on my shelf. I have only one complaint:

It's been 5 years now since I've read the "Gone Native" and yet "The Gray Tiger" hasn't been published. Cornett's friend Captain Phong, a born and bred Vietnamese Jungle Fighter and loyal anti-communist, was supposed to publish his memoirs - "The Gray Tiger." The few fragments that Cornett shares with us about Phongs life are fascinating and Phong truly deserves to have his own book - SO WHERE IS IT?! I hope to god that some knot-headed publisher hasn't turned down this book for publication because I would pay just about anything to hear this Man's story! I'm especially interested in hearing how the Native Vietnamese suffered under the boot of communist rule as there are STILL far-left elements in this country who believe that communist Vietnam was some kind of "worker's paradise" and deny that the communists systematically committed atrocities against political disenters, the Bru and other Native peoples of Vietnam as well! So, again, GIVE ME "THE GRAY TIGER!"

This is not an in depth analysis of special forces activity. It is a personal account of one soldiers tenure in Vietnam. It was the best of 4 books that I purchased on the subject.

Summary: "A troubled time, a troubled author"

The author did many courageous things while in Vietnam. But he was also undisciplined and had trouble with authority. He used drugs extensively while on duty and off. The book chronicles his run ins with the law in the US and with the military authorities in Vietnam. Also a great deal of time is spent recounting his sexual exploits.

Not a book I'd recommend to anyone. The writer is a troubled man and if you doubt this, you need look no further than this short excerpt from the book in which he details his fragging of his XO... an act for which he expressed no remorse. Inexcusable.

"The supply sergeant ran over to me to tell me that the XO had been wounded and needed my help. I knew I was in trouble right then because I hadn't gotten the job done. ... When I had pitched the grenade in, it had rolled underneath the desk and came to rest directly under his oak chair. When the grenade blew, it sent slivers of wood up his *ss and shredded his lower legs. With deep satisfaction, I saw that the grenade had really done some damage to him, though regrettably not enough to snuff him."
